vornkahl book

We have compiled most of our research results in book format.  The sources on which our results are based are found in pages 343-650 of the book.  From these sources, we have compiled (1) three lists of Vornkahls centered in Nettlingen, Berel, and the United States, (2) charts showing genealogical relationships in each the three lists, and (3) a number of accounts of Vornkahls in Germany and the United States.  Additional information on the organization of the book is found in pages 1-4 (see below for a link to this and other sections of the book).

The following describes how one might reference the sources given in the book, “Vornkahl.”

If you wish to give a citation for the date of marriage of Johanne Marie Elisabeth Vornkahl and Johann Hennig Brandes, the first step is to look up the name Johanne Marie Elisabeth Vornkahl in the list of Vornkahls in Nettlingen.  Under her name in the list, find the date of marriage and the source for the marriage - the source reference is found on the right-hand side of the page in square brackets and, in this example, is [1513].  Step two is to look up [1513] in the “Sources” section of the book (it is on page 483).  Step three is to find the the parish book from which the source is derived.  This is done by slowly paging backward until the title of the parish book is found (also on page 483 in this example).  The source is: “Verzeichniss der Copulirten und Aufgebotenen bei der lutherischen Kirche und Gemeinde zu Nettlingen und Helmersen vom 1sten Januar 1803 bis __.”  (English translation: “Record of Marriages and Marriage Banns in the Lutheran Church and Parish of Nettlingen and Helmersen from 1 Jan 1803 to __.”)  Choose the language you wish for the citation and add the page number given in the source; in this case p. 10(11).

Notes: (a) There is an underlined space __ in the title of the source book because the closing date for the book was never entered into the book.  (b) The page has two numbers, 10(11); p. 10 is the original hand written page number and p. 11 is a stamped page number.  Not all of the original record books have both hand written and stamped page numbers.

The citation to this source (in English) then will be:  Record of Marriages and Marriage Banns in the Lutheran Church and Parish of Nettlingen and Helmersen from 1 Jan 1803 to __, p. 10(11).
